What Causes Severe Itching In The Body?

For at least a year, I have been experiencing severe itching. It is mostly in the evening. Different areas over my entire body. I scratch so hard I leave scabs. I,m 53 was an alcoholic but quit drinking 6 mos ago. I believe my liver is fine. I m not taking any medicine that I wasn t four years ago. The last two nights have woke me up itching

Keeping in view your clinical history, possibility of elevated bile salts is likely.
I suggest you to get liver function tests to know the status of liver functions and urine for bile salts.
Elevated bile salts can lead to intense itching.
Drugs to lower bile salts will be required if bile salts are high.
