What Causes Severe Hand Cramps?

In the last two weeks have been experiencing fairly severe hand cramps. Have also had leg/foot cramps nightly for several years. What can I do to alleviate? NOTE: My thyroid was irradiated approximately 7 years ago. Don t know whether this has an impact or not.
