What Causes Severe Fatigue While On Warfarin?

I am a healthy active 71 yr old woman who had a hip replacement Jan 2 nd. I am taking warfarin and am so fatigued even though I am sleeping 9-10 hours and rest intermittently during the day by lying in bed reading. Can I expect my natural energy to return? BTW I normally take no meds at all, just natural vitamins and a very healthy diet. I am a normal weight . BP is stable at 120/68

Hello,

My answer is as follows:

Generally, Warfarin drug does not cause serious side effects. However, with any medicament any kind of side effect is possible. Warfarin, too, could cause in rare cases unusual or persistent fatigue and tiredness and if this is the case than you have to consult with your doctor.

Apart from the potential role of warfarin, I think that in your case, you are experiencing what so-called "fatigue following major surgery". In this case, fatigue is caused due to the physiological (normal) response of the body to the intervention or surgery. Literature suggests that post-operative fatigue is more dependent on the levels of fatigue before intervention. This means that persons that were feeling better (self-perceived well-being) prior to intervention experience less fatigue after surgery and those feeling worse experience more fatigue after surgery.

Numerous studies point out that fatigue decreases significantly (not due to chance) 1 - 6 months after intervention.

In this context, I think that the fatigue you are experiencing will slowly fade away as your body adapts to its new situation and there is little possibility that warfarin is the cause of the fatigue in your case.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ervin Toçi
