What Causes Severe Chills After Taking Penicillin?
My sister developed diverticulitis today, pain was on her right side...Ct scan was done..they gave her penicillin for it...she is experiencing chills & oddly enough, her bottom feels like she did a workout & is sore. Is this a reaction to the penicillin? Her pharmacy is closed & they did not provide her with a print out.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
Severe chills &muscle pain (sore bottom feeling) are known side effects of injection penicillin... though it cannot be labelled as an allergic reaction... she has to be careful about rashes or respiratory problems.
The chills &muscle pains last mostly for 24 hours... and the antibiotic starts attacking the causative bacteria.
During the trouble over the counter pain medicine, and personal care like adding extra blanket... drinking hot drinks can give relief.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
