What Causes Severe Chest Pain While Swallowing Solid Food?

I have some type of hernia at the end of my esophagus and beginning of my stomach making it hard to swallow sometimes, today I swallowed some food that got stuck and I tried to wash it down there was excruciating pain and blood when I threw it back up - I can swallow ok now but my chest really hurts. Could I have bruised it or do you think there could be a tear ?

Hi,

Thanks for posting your query.

There are some of possibilities in your case for your symptoms of chest pain during swallowing of food.

1. Acid peptic disease/ulceration in esophagus or some cardiac problem or muscular pain or hiatus hernia.

The most likely possibility seems to be acid peptic disease.

Bruise or tear over esophagus should be rule out by endoscopy.

You should undergo some routine blood works, ultrasound abdomen and upper GI endoscopy to detect the exact underlying cause.

In mean time please try following,

1. Avoid foods that are spicy, excess in calories.
Avoid junk food and soft drinks.
2. Take small frequent meals.
3. Avoid going to sleep for at least 2 hours after taking food.
4. Avoid tobacco in any form.
5. remain active and try to avoid stress.

Please consult your doctor preferably gastro-physician for having precise diagnosis.

I hope this helps.

Regards,
