What Causes Severe Chest Pain While Coughing?

I have had a bad cough for 4 weeks. The first couple weeks I was seeing a PA who prescribed antibiotic, cough syrup, inhaler and prendisone. I have coughed so hard that I have very sharp pain in my chest right under my left breast. This pain is not constant but whenever I cough or even try to take a deep breath it is very bad. Could I have pulled a muscle from coughing so much?
