What Causes Severe Body Ache Along With Cough And Headaches?

Hello, My wife says she is having a great deal of body pain with a headache and cough. She has been drinking vodka so she can sleep. I think its the flu. It seems like when she drinks the pain gets worse. she is 54 and can drink a lot normally. Is the alcohol making the symptoms worse??

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It sounds like your wife has a viral infection. They end up giving you, body aches along with a cough and headache. In my opinion, you should ask her to try the following:

1) Gargle- either salt water gargle or betadine gargles, twice a day.
2) Paracetamol drug for a headache and the body pain. If that does not work, then you can try Diclofenac drug.
3) You can get analgesic cough drops that numb the throat. This will help with a sore throat.

Avoid alcohol with the Paracetamol and Diclofenac drugs as it can cause severe Gastritis. The pain should come down with the above medications and then she should be able to sleep.

It is unlikely that the alcohol makes the symptoms worse, but avoiding it should help her feel better faster.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan
