What Causes Severe Back Pain While Deep Breathing Along With Persistent Cough?
Hi. I am a 40 year old female who has smoked cigarettes for 20 years. I recently started having some back pain that I first attributed to a pulled muscle. However the pain spread and increased to the point that I could not inhale very deeply without it causing a severe stabbing type pain. During this time I also developed a persistent cough with a lot of phlegm . On day 3 I began coughing up blood. I then went to a doctor who did chest X-rays which were said to look fine. He gave me a 1000mg shot of Rocephin in the office and sent me home with cough syrup. That was a week ago. I am feeling better but am still coughing up blood which has me very concerned. Can you give me your opinion and or advice on my situation? Thank you in advance.
It is understandable to be concerned about coughing up blood.
Infection is a possible cause, this is the reason the course of antibiotics was given.
The xray should have shown up any lesions in the chest but since you are still seeing blood you may need to consider additional imaging such as a CT scan to make sure it is clear.
If you have a history of post nasal drip , this can also cause a cough by irritating the throat.
I hope this helps
