What causes severe anxiety at night?

I have anxiety attacks which are worse at night. I can t sleep more than an hour or two at a time, and I feel impending doom , especially if I lay down. It seems somewhat better when I sit up. It also feels like I can t have a complete bowel movement. I always feel like I have to go to the bathroom, but when I get there it doesn t happen, or only partially and it feels like it s not empty. I do take hydrocodone. My doctor gave me hydroxyzine to help me sleep but I am a fraud to take it, the side effects sound really bad and I am 69 years old. What can be causing these problems?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The symptoms like feeling of impending doom, altered bowel movements and feelings of incomplete evacuation, restlessness etc are symptoms of anxiety only. If the symptoms are bothering you then please visit your doctor for reevaluation. Hydroxyzine can help in reducing the anxiety symptoms but if the medicine is not controlling the symptoms then there is need to get proper anti anxiety drugs. SSRIs can help to reduce the symptoms.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

I am experiencing intense feelings of anxiety quite different from the past year since my husband’s death. It has been a difficult time for me but I’ve managed well without meds. Last wk was the one yr anniversary of his death. Tomorrow I leave for a 10day trip to Switzerland and Italy with a tour group with whom we frequently traveled. I am taking my 17yr old granddaughter with me. We both are excited about going. I can’t see a correlation between these feelings and the trip. The only other symptom I have is increased frequency in in urination. Only once last night did I experience an inability to urinate accompanied by a mild pain. No problems since. I’m running out of time to see my doctor before I leave. Should I be concerned?

I don t know whether I should go to the doctor about this issue or try to deal with it on my own. I have been dealing with severe anxiety for the past month, and I keep telling myself I m going to get over it but I m not. I had a severe anxiety attack about a month ago that sent me to the emergency room, and now I fear death so much to the point where I have become derealized, I feel like if I go to the doctor he won t take me seriously, cause when I went to the emergency room for my panic attack i feel like the doctor brushed it off like it was nothing. I can t even sleep at night because I m afraid I m going to die, I don t know what to do.

Why do I feel feelings of fight or flight at night when I go to sleep? I may fall asleep some nights, but then waken with that horrible feeling and need to get out of bed! I take 5 mg of xanax before bed, but when I get up again, I sometimes take another 5 mg of xanax. Is this anxiety or panic attacks?
