What Causes Severe Anger And Depression?

My granddaughter is 20 and since puberty has suffered from irritability, anger, depression and mood swings. What would you think the cause would be? She is now on birth control that seemed to help for a while. Is it possible that she produces too much estrogen?

Hi,

I have read your query, irritability, anger, depression and mood swings are normal during this age period, we call it as a transition period. However, it can be pathological when it's beyond the normal range and potentially harming the individual and others. Let me tell you a few things which you should know in this scenario:
1) Estrogen does not cause anger, irritability and other mood swings its quite the other way around, estrogen, one of the major sex hormones in women, assists the brain and body with producing beta-endorphins and serotonin – both of which are vital to a positive state of mind. Estrogen also assists in balancing the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine. Not only are bursts of anger more likely when estrogen-deficient, anxiety and stress are too.
2) Her thyroid hormones could be a culprit where hyperthyroidism can cause anxiety and hypothyroidism can cause depression.
3) Progesterone has the opposite effect on mood. Brain scientists use the word ‘inhibitor’ to describe the chemical’s function, which is just a fancy way of saying it slows the brain down.
4) So sit and talk to her, sometimes all people need is good counseling, if it persists do consult with a behavioral therapist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Moses John Wesley,
