What Causes Saliva To Pour Out Of Mouth While Talking?

When my 95-year old father talks for more than 10 seconds, saliva pours out of his mouth. If he resumes talking, the same thing happens again after about 10-15 seconds. By the way, he takes Nexium for acid reflux, but he says it has not given him any relief. For much of his life he was an accomplished public speaker, but now refuses to attend events for fear that people will ask him to speak. I'm concerned because he's so concerned about this saliva (and sometimes plegm), issue. Can you suggest any relief or explanation?

Hi,
Thanks for asking.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows.
1. If nexium is not effective for acid reflux, he can take pantoprazole with domperidone. Domperidone is necessary in acid reflux, to prevent acid from reluxing into esophagus from stomach
2. Increased salivation due to certain medications side effects is the main cause. He can take anti-cholinergic medications, it could be helpful. Reflux can also cause increased salivation.
3. Not to be concerned. Medications, with side effects maybe evaluated and appropriately changed. Discuss with your doctor. Medication details necessary for further opinion.
Hope it helps.
