What Causes Rise In Eye Pressure While Suffering From Macular Degeneration?

My husband is 68 years old and had 4 bypasses early December 2014. He has done great with the operation and back to work. He has macular degeneration and has been seeing an eye specialist and regular eye doctor receiving shots in his eyes and uses 2 different eye drops and I Cap vitamins for approximately 4-5 years. He was just told a few weeks ago that his eye pressure has increased and his eye sight has deteriorated a lot in the past few weeks. He heard from someone today who had heart surgery that his heart surgery may be the cause. Is this possible?

Hello,

Heart surgery is not the cause of your husband's increase in eye pressure. The following may be few probable causes of increase in eye pressure:
1) Occular hypertension
2) Glaucoma

Occular hypertension is just increase in intraocular pressure more than 21 mm of hg. Careful observation and regular checking helps in detection of glaucoma and timely treatment without loss of vision.

The following are risk factors of glaucoma or increase in intraocular pressure:
1) Age over 55
2) Asian or hispanic heritage
3) Family history of glaucoma
4) Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, migraines, high blood pressure and sickle cell anemia
5) Corneas that are thin in the center
6) Extreme nearsightedness or farsightedness
7) Eye injury or certain types of eye surgery
8) Taking corticosteroid medicines, especially eye drops, for a long time

Prompt treatment can control glaucoma and improve eye sight.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
