What Causes Rise In BP Level After Weight Training Exercises?

Hi, I'm a healthy, fit and active 55 yr old male. I have a healthy normal diet and I do not take any supplements. I recently gained 5 lb of solid muscle through stringent daily cardio and weight training exercises. My blood pressure went up from 130/70 to 140/80. Is this normal? What's the cause?

I read your question and I understand your concern.

First in case you don't know, blood pressure measurements should be taken under certain conditions which include at least 5 minutes of rest, seated, without taking coffee, tea or other stimulants 30 minutes preceding the measurement.
Also to make the diagnosis of high blood pressure one measurement is not enough, high values have to be found on at least 3 separate occasions.
Regarding your values, they are still under the threshold over which a diagnosis of high blood pressure is made. Your diastolic blood pressure (80) is perfectly normal, while the systolic one at 140 is at the limit of what is called pre-hypertension, meaning it requires attention and monitoring in the future.
So for the moment I wouldn't be alarmed, just check your blood pressure periodically, and only if on several occasions it is above 140/90 (under the above mentioned conditions) then medical evaluation is required.

I hope to have been of help.
