What Causes Right-sided Rib Pain While Coughing?

Hi, I ve been getting a pain in my right side, lower rib cage, it seems to come & go. When it s there if I breath sharply or cough or sneeze it hurts a lot. Sometimes I can feel a sort of gurgling wheezing sound in my right lower lung area, it s worse if I lie on my right hand side. It started about a week ago, then seemed to go but has just come back. I m 57 male a little over weight, I play tennis once a week, I can cycle fine, I m farmer and do a fair bit of walking so I d say I m generally pretty fit.I don t have a cold or any chest problems that I know of, I ve never smoked.

Hi,

As you mentioned that you are pretty fit, that is a good thing. Such type of pain in the lower part of chest (lung) may be due to these possibilities.

These include:

1. Plueral friction (pleural effusion, that is fluid in the pleura i.e. membrane surrounding lung).

2. Consolidation of part of lung ( diseased area or part).

3. Liver pain (aggravate during coughing). Since pain is for 7 days so get in an X-RAY of effected part and consult a primary care physician.

Hope this will help you. Let me know if I can assist you further. Good luck for healthy life.

Regards,
Dr. Het Ram Bishnoi
