What Causes Reduced BPM Rate?

I am inquiring about a low/slow heart beat of 42 beats per minute. My son-in-law (French) is in the hospital for tests. He has been getting progressively weaker. Am waiting for my daughter to update me, but due to the time-difference, that probably won t be until tomorrow.
