What Causes Redness In Eyes And Extreme Swelling Of Lids?

my Daughter's family was exposed to n eye infection (not pink eye) which causes an infection of the lids and eye. it incubates for about 2 weeks and starts with red eye and extreme swelling of lids. The Optometrist has them on oral antibiotics eye antibiotics and steroid ointments for the eye. After about a month the baby's eyes have cleared up but are still slightly swollen. Her husband's eyes are still slightly pink and swollen. Her son (aged 7) has a red eye swollen lids and bleeding from the corners as well as hers. The Optometrist removed a film from her eye which he said was a barrier from the virus or bacterial infection. It has been over a week since he removed this film and 28 days since it started. The Drs. are stumped. and the two are still experiencing extreme pain. Do you have any idea what this might be or how to treat?

Ophthalmologist 's  Response
Hello
It seems from the history that your daughters family is having severe redness of eyes, swelling of eye lids associated with membrane formation and sometimes bleeding from the eyes.
All these symptoms point to membranous conjunctivitis and the common causes are severe bacterial infections and corynebacterium diphtheriae.
Hence you require evaluation and probably culture of the conjunctival discharge to find out the underlying causative agent and treatment according to the sensitivity report.

Thank you

Your daughter is having viral conjuuntivitis. It can effect her good eye or other person coming near her or using her linens towel. It is self limiting, antibiotic drop will controll secondery infection. Analgesic anti inflamatory will givethem relief. Vitamin C can begiven for increasing imunity. With this treatment both of them will improve.
