What Causes Reddishness And Cracking On Lips And Tongue?

My 75 year old husband has a very chalky taste in his mouth and the inside of his lips and tongue have a strange reddish color and cracking consistency. It is sometimes painful when eating and sometimes is hard to swallow. He takes blood pressure and prostate meds could this be the cause?

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain redness and cracking of lips and pain while eating can be due to Apthous Stomatitis and as you are taking blood pressure medicines the cause can be dry mouth which is a side effect of blood pressure medicines..
Other causes can be deficiency of iron and vitamin B12, stress, acid reflux etc..
You need to consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and treatment of the underlying cause can help in resolution..
As of now start taking symptomatic treatment like gargle with numbing mouthwash, take tylenol or Ibuprofen to relieve pain and inflammation, do cold water rinses and suck ice pops, Avoid hot and spicy foods..
Drink plenty of water and chew sugar free chewing gums..
Maintain a good oral hygiene..
