What Causes Red Swollen Spot On Tonsil In A Child?

My child age 5 has a black/red spot on her left hand tonsil, it looks red and swollen. She has been off her food for 7 - 8 days, getting progressively worse. Holding food in mouth to avoid swallowing. No temperature or any other cold symptoms. She only started to complain yesterday.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain black/ red spot over tonsil along with pain, redness and swelling seems to be due to inflammation and infection in throat that does not necessarily be associated with cold and fever and can be due to bacterial infection or strep throat..
Difficulty in swallowing is also due to inflammation and pain..
I would suggest you to give him a short course of antibiotics like Amoxicillin or Azithromycin, anti-inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen, do warm saline gargles and steam inhalations..
Give him more of fluids and a soft and semi solid diet..
You can also avoid spicy and chilled foods..
Hard foods should also be avoided as it can increase irritation in throat..
Use a humidifier in his room as moist air can soothe the throat and reduce irritation..
In case of no resolution in a week consult a Paediatrician and he can advise a throat swab culture and blood tests to rule out the exact cause for the symptoms and treat accordingly..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
