What Causes Red Itchy Bumps At The Site Of Steroid Injection?

I received a steroid shot yesterday. It has since become really itchy, 2 red bumps around the injection site, a bruise, and just below the bruise a red ring. Does this mean I m having an allergic reaction? What can be done to help alleviate the redness, and itching besides benadryl?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to HCM.
Thank You for your query.
I can completely understand your concern.

With your history, I would conclude that its not an allergic reaction,

Its just called the "POST_INJECTION FLARE".
1.the flare very rarely includes shrinkage (atrophy) and
2.Lightening of the color (de-pigmentation) of the skin at the injection site, 3.Introduction of bacterial infection into the body (such as a joint infection), 4.Local bleeding from broken blood vessels in the skin or muscle,
5.Soreness at the injection site, and
6.Aggravation of inflammation in the area injected because of reactions to the corticosteroid medication (post-injection flare).
Increased pain after the injection is typically due to a post-injection flare because true allergies to cortisone are very rare.

Excessively frequent, repeated injections into the same area can cause the bone, ligaments, and tendons to weaken.

You need not worry about the issue,As the flare would take minimum 2-3days to go off.If it Persists,Consult your GP,as he would examine you,and he would know your history better, and he can treat you accordingly.
