What Causes Red And Itchy Swollen Areas On The Lips When Suffering From HIV?

Hello Dr. Mintz, I have two swollen areas on my lips, one on my lower lip, the other right above it on my upper lip. They are dark red in color and very itchy. They seemed to just appear out of nowhere and I have never had this issue before. I am HIV positive, with a T-cell count of more than 800 and no detectable viral load. Could this be related to my HIV status? Do I have anything to worry about? Thank you for your prompt response. Jim Woodworth

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* The condition of red, itchy swollen areas on lips with history of HIV is most likely due to underlying Herpes infection with HSV lesion.

I would recommend an immediate consultation with your treating physician in this regard, as if it goes untreated, chances of remaining the virus in ganglia and provoking long term lesions are very high.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
