What Causes Recurring Itchy Red Rash On Groin Area?

I am a 54 yr old woman. I have been having a reoccurring rash under my breast. My PA told me it was a yeast infection, and prescribed me an antibiotic and cream. That has been a year ago. I always use the cream when is comes back, and use it until it clears up. Then in a couple of weeks or so, it starts in again. Then about a month ago, it has started in my groin area. Is there anything I can do to keep this from reoccurring time and time again? It is extremely itchy, red with bumps, and very painful. Do you think it is a yeast infection causing this? I have never had a vaginal yeast infection, but am worried since I now get it in my groin area. Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so very much for your time. Carol

Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic

I would keep a possibility of Intertrigo. Intertrigo is defined as inflammation of the body folds.
Intertrigo clinically presents as red, moist, scaly, sore patches of skin on closely opposed body folds like axilla, groins, submammary folds etc.
Closely opposing body folds trap sweat and moisture and therefore make the area prone to inflammation from rubbing against each other.

Candidal infection may superimpose (Candidal Intertrigo) thereby exacerbating the inflammation (redness and soreness).

You may try an OTC topical antifungal e.g clotrimazole 1% cream, twice daily in the affected folds for 4- 6 weeks.
If I was the treating doctor I would have also started you on oral antifungals e.g Oral Fluconazole, in addition to the topical antifungal cream.
Oral antifungals are faster acting and better in controlling the condition. Oral antifungals are prescription drugs.

It is important to keep the folds dry.

Once the condition has improved significantly on topical and oral antifungals, you may use an antifungal dusting powder in the folds, twice daily, for maintenance of improvement and preventing a recurrence.
An antifungal dusting powder not only keep the folds dry but also inhibits the growth of fungus/yeast thus preventing recurrence/exacerbation of Intertrigo.

Also get your blood sugar levels checked because recurrent candidal infections are common in those who have impaired glucose tolerance/diabetes.
