What Causes Recurring Hives Like Rashes On Shoulders, back And Face?

Hi. I have had a rash for over a month now on my shoulders, back, face and spread slowly now to my neck. It seems to flare up under extreme stress like hives. I feel tired and feverish, but no fever exists. The rash seems to be blisterish when flaring up. It seems to be gradually spreading down my back and front to stochmach. I ve been to a dermatologist and he gave me prescription steroid ointment and antibiotics. That did not help. I went to to a walk in clinic because I was out of town and symptoms were worse, and they gave me predisone and a stronger antibiotic. It has been a week and the symptoms keep coming and going as I tend to stress more. Please help!

Hi,
welcome to health care magic,
I have read your full query and understand your problem.

Urticaria or allergic hives can occur due to various causes like,

1) Infections (bacterial, viral, fungal)
2) Drugs(Pain killers/ antibiotics etc)
3) Certain foods and food additives/preservatives
4) Physical Urticaria:Cold temperature, Heat,Pressure (Prolonged Standing, Sitting), Dermographism etc.
5) A few cases have no underlying cause and are known as idiopathic urticaria.

They generally disappears after few hours without any treatment but needs immediate medical attention when they cause symptoms like itching or burning or sometimes pain or persists longer.

Apart from antibiotics and steroids, you should also take,

Antihistamines like benadryl or allegra (fexofenadinr 120 mg) twice daily available over the counter for 3 to 5 days.

A topical soothing lotion like calamine lotion would help her symptomatically if there is itching.

You can continue with steroid (like hydrocortisone) topical cream but I think you will require systemic steroids from orally like tab.wysolone 40 mg once daily initially for 3 days followed by gradual reduction in the dose like 20 mg then 10 mg.

As steroids are prescription drugs and may have some serious side effects, so they must be taken under doctor's guidance for which you should see some local doctor or dermatologist who can prescribe you.

To avoid future recurrence, of this hives, better to identify the allergen or causative organism and avid its exposure as far as you can.

Hope this will help you.

Regards,
