What Causes Recurring Abscess On The Inner Cheek?

My son has a cyst or absess under the skin on the inside of his cheek. It pops and comes back again and again. This site says it comes from infection. Other sites say a block saliva duct. Others say it is from spicy food. Could it be that he bites the inside of his mouth when he sleeps? it looks large tonight. He is in college and sent a picture

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain and the explanation of sequence of occurrence and if your son has a cheek biting habit there are more chances that he has a a tendency to injure the minor salivary glands or their ducts present on the inner side of cheeks and causing spillage of mucous into the adjacent soft tissues leading to formation of a small lump which is fluid filled and us known as MUCOCELE..
Mucocele is mostly painless..

If it is a painful reddish lesion with a whitish centre it can be a recurring apthous ulcer..

I would suggest you to consult a dentist and get a clinical checkup done and in case it is a mucocele small mucoceles heals mostly by themselves but in recurring cases you can get a surgical removal done..
Salt water rinses can help in shrinking the lump and healing..

In case of canker sores or apthous ulcer avoiding sour foods, salt water rinses, application of numbing gels in case of pain, application of steroid gels, and taking multivitamins for 15 days can help..

Hope your query is solved..

Thanks and regards..
