What Causes Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections?

My wife has had blood in her urine recently, and has had a diagnosis of UTI. She was prescribed an antibiotic and had a second UTI within 2 weeks time, followed by a period-normal cycle since her last. she has had a cat scan today, but I am concerned something more may be wrong. She is a healthy 48 year old, with a mother who had uterine cancer, and a sister who had cervical cancer. Should I be worrying?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
YOu wife has recurrant UTI along with blood in urine, could be due to-
* IN sufficient course of antibiotics or treating with antibiotic to which the bacteria is resistance... can lead to recurrant UTI.
-Renal caliculi ( stones ) can cause recurrant urinary symptoms with blood in urine
- Chronic UTI can have these symptoms
* Culture & sensitivity test of urine would help in recognisisng exact causative organism & antibiotic to which they are senitive to.
A full course of antibiotics as per advise of your treating physician ( guided by uerine culture & sensitivity test ) & a prolonged follow up investigations would help in getting rid of the recurrant UTI.
* She aslo hs family history of genital cancers. It's natural to be scared of cancer with sight of blood in urine......
She should get through physical examination& tumer marker tests ( suggested by onchologist) periodically to get rid of the tension.
Thanks
