What Causes Recurrent Nasal Bleeding?

I've only had one active nosebleed since february 2016. before that i had surgery (april 2015) to stop constantly re-curring nosebleeds. still had some nosebleeds after april 2015 to february 2016 when i changed ENT doctors. the new doctor prescribed mupironcin 5MG with distilled water rinse for the nose twice daily for awhile. also an oral antibiotic. that worked for quite awhile, then i think i had that one nosebleed and he prescribed the nasal rinse once more. been ok since then but more and more lately getting small amounts of blood on tissue. they always stop but are concerning to me as i do NOT want to go thru nose surgery again. before the nose surgery i had several cauterizations and a balloon inserted for about 3 days and nights. really nasty and extremely unconfortable. i ended up bleeding thru that balloon and had the surgery. I am going to my new ENT doctor tomorrow as i had a little more bleeding from left nostril that stopped and i can see it's stopped bleeding cause i see the 2 little scabs that are developing. if i were to touch them they would start "weeping" again. so hands off and no nose blowing for sure. i've been using AYR gel and spray religiously for along time. i am afraid to use them tonite for fear of recurring "weeping" starting again. to top it all off i wear a humidified CPAP. really do not like it. i feel it could be a contributing cause. moisture level up high with heated tubing. humidifiers struggling to keep it higher. i am going to sleep study at northwestern next week to try to find alternative to CPAP for my sleep apnea. any comments or suggestions. thank you very much.

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Since you have already taken opinion of few ENT Doctors [must have ruled out sinus/nasal infection] and have undergone surgery for the same but the symptoms are recurrent so:

i. Apart from local causes like trauma, mucosal irritation, septal abnormality, inflammatory diseases, tumors one should check with systemic causes like blood abnormalities, arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure, hereditary [autosomal dominant], and idiopathic causes [get an opinion of hematologist].

ii. One should keep following things in mind: sneeze with open mouth, avoid hard blowing. Do not use nasal digital manipulation. Avoid hot spices/hot shower. Avoid aspirin and pain killers.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Munish Sood
