What Causes Recurrent Heart Burn Despite Taking An Antacid?

I had heartburn last night that lasted almost 3 hours. I rarely get heart burn but this time it really was painful in my stomach and through my back. I took antacid liquid then tryed baking soda an water and tums. It helped for a little while and then would come back . Is there something else I could do if this happens again.

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your complain, heartburn along with pain in stomach seems to be due to acid reflux or GERD. Well, all these symptoms are indicative of acid reflux and it leads to regurgitation of acid and food particles from stomach to food pipe and throat. I would suggest you to consult a gastroenterologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like upper GI Endoscopy can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly.

You can be advised to take Proton Pump Inhibitors like Omeprazole or Pantoprazole. Take antacids like milk of magnesia. Avoid spicy food and drink plenty of water. Always take walk after meals and take your dinner at least 2 hours before sleep. You should sleep with head slightly raised as compared to feet.

Hope this information helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks and regards,
Dr. Honey Nandwani Arora
