What Causes Rectal Bleeding?

I am 39 weeks today. Lost my mucus plug last Thursday and had my membrane stripped last Tuesday. Today when I used the toilet I had a strong odor of period blood. There was nothing in my panties, but there was a dark red v/ brownish color when I wiped. What could be happening?
