What Causes Rashes On Stomach Spreading All Over The Body?

A two year old male is experiencing a rash on his stomach that has spread to other parts of his body. He is irritable and wakes at night crying and difficult to subdue. His temperature is below normal, about 96.8. What could be the cause? He has tested negative for strep. P.A. says a virus, possible hand foot and mouth. Mom says he has had hand foot and mouth before and the symptoms were very different from this. Mom is very concerned and considering E. R. I told that E.R. is not warranted at this point. What are your thoughts?

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hi.
As per your case history the child may be having viral exanthem.
My treatment advice is -
1. Apply a soothing lotion like calamine lotion on affected region twice daily.
2. Take an antihistamine medication like levocetrizine twice daily for 7-10 days.
3. Other treatment options are oral antibiotics, oral steroid taken only after consulting a dermatologist.

Thanks.
