What Causes Rashes Around The Neck And Face Of A Child?

My daughter, age 12, broke out in a rash. It started around her neck area then advanced to her face, down her chest and back, and then noticed it on her upper thigh area. The sides of her neck were solid red then the chest area had a lacy look. I originally thought it was sunburn but than it kept getting worse and spreading. She then broke out in scaly skin around her eyes (they had been rashy and slightly swollen), her ears, and her scalp. She had other patchy areas of dry skin look on her face. It has been pretty itchy. I took her to her pediatrician and she stated it was an allergic reaction and gave her 5 days of Prednisone 20mg. She finished the Prednisone this past Sunday but her neck and chest area are still itchy and red. Her DR said I needed to figure out what she was allergic to. The only new thing I can think of is her shampoo and conditioner. I accidentally purchased one for people who color their hair. She used it 2x and is now using the kind she had used before. It is still itchy and she has had areas that looked seepy around her right ear. I have not noticed any other symptoms--no nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or fever. Thanks for your time!! God bless you!

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* The appearance of rashes around the neck and face with the history of use of hair color indicates allergic eruptions and secondary reactions. I would recommend following for her better recovery

- local application of ice
- calamine lotion use over the affected parts 3-4 times a day
- antihistamine as Benadryl or others for itching control
- discuss need of steroid shot with her pediatrician if the condition persists beyond a period of 12 hours.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
