What Causes Rapid Heart Rate While Suffering From High BP?

I can hear and feel my heart beating really hard. In fact I feel as if my body is shaking with every beat. What could be this problem? I am 59 years old and I am having high blood pressure for the past 3 years. I lost my wife 3 years back, she died suddenly due to aneurism. I need you reply please. Thank you Aloysius

I would recommend as follows:

Hello Aloysius!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I understand your concern, and would like to explain that palpitations (those hard cardiac beating) you are experiencing need further investigations, to ascertain whether a cardiac arrhythmia is not present.

First step would be a careful physical exam and a resting ECG. Several blood tests are necessary to exclude possible etiological causes of palpitations, like complete blood count (to exclude anemia), thyroid function tests for possible underlying implications, blood electrolytes level, a fasting glucose, also kidney and liver function tests for excluding respective disorders, etc.

If suspicions are raised for potential arrhythmic events, an ambulatory ECG monitoring and cardiac ultrasound would be helpful.

If no evidence of arrhythmia is revealed, and no other disorders are detected, then the most probable cause of your problems (palpitations and hypertension from almost 3 years, when you lost your wife), seems to be anxiety and increased stressful status.

At that point, I would recommend consulting a specialist (psychiatrist) for an optimal evaluation of your mental health and an appropriate management strategy.

If optimally treatment of anxiety is achieved, then a better resolution of your complains (palpitation, and hypertension as well) will ensue.

Hope to have been helpful to you!

Feel free to ask me, if you have any further uncertainties!

Greetings! Dr. Iliri
