Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Rapid Heart Beat After Having Caffeinated Drinks?
I have a problem with rapid heart beats. I had a pulse rate of 168 for about 10 minutes, it lowered to 148 for about 20 minutes, and is now at 72. I take a beta blocker (Atenolol) for previous problems with this issue. In this case I was able to get my rate back down by coughing, as advised by my doctor previously. This high rate has not happened in a few years, since I ve been on the beta blocker. It may be caffeine related - I drank a soda with lunch. My question is what length of time should I wait before going to ER or calling 911 if this happens again?
Based on your introduction, I strongly recommend you to avoid caffeinated drinks!!! Your rapid heart beat can be related also with your emotional state such as anxiety or stress etc..
If you can control these both, I think you will less risk for irregular heart beats.
If this happens in the other situations and other symptoms or signs occur, you should go to ER or call 911 ASAP.
All the best!
