What Causes Prolonged Menstrual Bleeding While On Seasonique?

My 17 year old daughter starting taking Seasonique 6 1/2 weeks ago because she was having very bad pain due to ovarian cysts. Three and a half weeks into taking the pills she started her period and it has been going for 15 days. She does not have the pain she was having but is concerned why she would be having a period now when she should not be for 3 months. Is this common?

Hi,

Seasonique is a combination of Ethinyl estradiol and Levonorgestrel. It can cause breakthrough bleeding in the first three months of the intake.

However, if she is very uncomfortable and sick, bleeding continuously or if bleeding is too heavy then inform the treating doctor immediately so that she can be examined before she gets weak and fatigued. The doses may need to be monitored or a substitute medication can be given that suits her better.

Give her iron supplements and calcium-rich diet. Take care.
