What Causes Prolonged Cough?

I think I have a chest cold. I have had a severe cough for 4 weeks. I do not have a fever or any other symptoms. Overall I feel ok. But the drainage from my throat seems to stay very tight in my chest and hard to cough anything up. Should I be concerned since my cough has lasted this long?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Seems mostly allergic bronchitis likely. As it is 4 weeks duration, a formal check up with your family doctor is strongly recommended to evaluate the respiratory tract clinically till then:
• Inhalation of vapors of boiled water with added tincture benzoin in it 3 times a day with blanket over the head
• Gargles with salted lukewarm water and added peppermint oil 3 times/day
• Avoid exposure to dusty environments, if needed use face mask wisely
• Maintain hydration with plenty of liquids
• Avoid chilled beverages, excess sugar, chilly items, non veg stuffs, ice creams, cookies, etc.
• Avoid exposure to excess cold
• Maintain room temperature according to your body adjustments, avoid air conditioner/cooler for long periods
• Remain ambulatory with walking in fresh air, yoga with deep breathing exercises help in great extent

These tricks will work best in your condition.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Purva Patel
