What Causes Prolonged Bronchitis?

I have had bronchitis for 6 weeks now. It started as a low fever and after 4 days, I started coughing. It has been going on ever since(6weeks )About 10 days ago, I started getting a sore throat and pain in my ears and now one ear is completely stuffed, so I decided it wasn't just a case of stubborn bronchitis and I went to the doc 8 days ago, and was prescribed levaquin and prednisone. After 8 days, and nothing happening, I went back. They prescribed Z Pac and a bigger dose of prednisone. I am hoping this works, but I guess am just looking for a second opinion. I am getting worried because I have never been sick longer than 2 weeks. I am 51 years old and do not smoke.

Hello
As you mentioned that you were having fever initially and after 4 days developed cough also .
Took elvofloxacin and prednisolone and after this antibiotics changed to Z pack .
Ear pain also started .
All these symptoms are for 6 weeks , may be due to these possibilities , these include:
1 Tuberculosis ,as you are right , that this is not a case of simple or (stub born ) bronchitis . Diagnosis can be confirmed by Xray chest , sputum for AFB and blood examination.
2 Bronchiectasis , another most common cause of such symptoms . Diagnosis can be confirmed by physical examination as well sputum and clinical examination.
3 Asthmatic allergic bronchitis ,this is one of the most common cause of such symptoms . Usually patient don't respond to antibiotics but require some bronchodilators.
In my opinion consult a PULMONOLOGIST and get his opinion as 6 weeks passed.
Hope this will help you.
