What Causes Productive Cough Along With Running Nose?

My son woke up the other day with a wet sounding cough and runny nose. He is choking on mucus and now has coughed so much is voice is gone. It only appears to be in his throat and nose, not chest. He appears to also have a sore throat now from coughing. Is this just a cold?

Hello and welcome to HCM,
Productive cough or cough associated with sputum production is suggestive of lower respiratory infection.
Running nose is due to infection and inflammation of the nasal tract.
Thus, an antibiotic course is required to control the infection and a cough suppressant to control the cough.
I suggest you to consult your primary healthcare provider for clinical assessment and prescription of antibiotic and cough suppressant.

Thanks and take care
