What Causes Popping Sensation In The Jaw And Ear?

I was eating mac n cheese late yesterday afternoon and felt a pop and severe pain in my left jaw and ear. It was so bad I had to spit out the remaining chew and immediately take a pain med and lay down. I did fall asleep and when I awake I noticed there is major swelling exactly where the pain is under the left
side of my jaw and neck and the pain is into my teeth and ear. What could it be? Is it most sensible to book an appt with an EENT, Dentist or PCP?

Hi,

The pain seems to be due to any fractured tooth or due to dislocation in jaw joint that is leading to severe pain. At times sudden vigorous biting can cause blow to tooth leading to fracture. Deep decay can also be a cause. Excessive mouth opening and sudden biting can cause trauma to jaw joint leading to pain.

Consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and a Panoramic x ray can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly. As of now take anti-inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen or Naproxen if pain is mild to moderate but if pain is severe higher painkillers like Tramadol or Ketorolac can be taken. Take soft diet and avoid excessive mouth opening.

Hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
