What Causes Popping In The Ear Upon Yawning And Burping?

Sometimes when I burp or yawn there is a whole bunch of popping sounds in my ear, its more like crackling, and it sometimes sounds like I have water in my ear but I haven't been swimming or anything since June. Is this normal or should I see a doctor?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I understand your concern. Your symptoms could be due to a dysfunction of Eustachian Tube. It connects the middle ear with nasopharynx. It could be due to common cold and allergy that cause blockage of tube and accumulation of fluid in middle ear. When you blow your nose or burp ,the pressure is increased to opens the tube, that can be heard as a popping sound in ear.

If you don't have pain, discharge or hearing loss in your ear then there is nothing to worry about. You can take anticongested drug like diamenic DA, and ibuprofen, steam inhalation. If problem persists then consult ENT specialist and undergo examination, Otoscopy, x ray and Audiometry for further evaluation. Prescribed antibiotic can be useful. Avoid cold beverages.

Hope this may help you. Contact further if follow up needed.

Best regards,
Dr. Sagar
