What Causes Plugged Ears?

For a few days I started having issues with my left ear - it would feel plugged and pop and repeat that process a few times with just normal day activities. I usually wear ear plugs when I sleep so I stopped wearing them for a few days. But I took a flight today and during the flight when I was trying to sleep and the plane was descending I felt intense pressure in that same ear and then intense pain and then nothing - I could no longer hear out of that ear. It s been about 15 hours. I still feel pressure in my ear and pain with that. My ear started ringing maybe 5 hours ago and still is. I seem to be able to hear a bit more. For awhile when I would move my head it felt/sounded like there s something moving inside the ear and the pressure feels like it moves as well. It s not doing that currently. I tried laying on my side incase it was an ear infection that needed to drain but no pus or fluid has come out. It hurts a lot more laying down then sitting up. And there have been 2 times I ve felt sharp pain again for maybe 15-30 seconds and then it goes back to the achy/nagging pain. I was wonder if I should be concerned that I still feel pain and pressure for this long and what it could be?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The popping sensation can occur as a result of eustachian tube dysfunction which refers to abnormal function of the eustachian tube.

This is a tube in the middle ear that connects the ear to an area at the back of the throat. It has different functions including helping with the pressure in the ear.
It can give trouble in different circumstances eg ear infection, sinus infection, recent travel on a plane (as in your case), cough/cold

It can go away on its own though the time this takes would vary. The use of an anti histamine/decongestant combination would help eg zyrtec d, allegra d, claritine d, benadryl d

I hope this helps
