What Causes Persisting Fevers, Pneumonia And Infections?

I have a question concerning my father in law. He had open heart surgery 2 years ago. He also has myastenia gravis. During open heart they removed his thymus. He has been in the hospital numerous times with fevers, weakness, pneumonia, an infections. After numerous rounds of anitbiotic it still continues. This last time they the doctors said that they think they have finally pinpointed the type of infection that he has. So they have started him on 6 weeks of IV antibiotics at home. Three weeks into this treatment he has developed another fever. Would really like to know what is going on, what could be causing this to reoccur???
