What Causes Persistent Vomiting And Diarrhea While Detoxing From Opiates?
My 24 yr. old son is detoxing from opiates at home, his doc prescribed clonidine and Xanax. Yesterday he had 24hrs of vomiting and diaherra (the runs). Followed by light headedness and fainting today. OTC blood pressure monitor number drops until it gives error message. Doc will not return call, son is conscious, eating and drinking. But pale and weak should I call 911?
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
I can understand your concern. Opioids cause chronic constipation and withdrawal of opioids results in diarrhoea which could become severe also. He is detoxing from opioids and is having diarrhoea. Medicines like Clonidine and Xanax can help to improve the symptoms like craving, autonomic symptoms, severe restlessness and insomnia. He is currently having persisting diarrhoea and vomiting. The vomiting could be occurring due to hypotension caused by Clonidine. So get his BP checked immediately even if the digital BP machine is showing error. Give him plenty of fluids and if possible ORS solution. This will normalise BP. Drugs like Loperamide are found to be very useful in opioid withdrawal diarrhoea. The medicine is an opioid derivative and it has been found to be very useful in intractable diarrhoea. Please report to his doctor if symptoms persist. He is oriented but is pale and weak. If symptoms worsen call 911.
Thanks. I hope this helps you. Take care
