What Causes Persistent Vaginal Itching?

Hello, For approximately 3 days have have experienced fairly severe itching on the outer skin of my vagina and inner thighs. I am certain it is not an STD as I have been active with one person for over a year and was tested prior to that and he has only ever been active with me. I have not recently changed and soaps, lotions, detergents, etc. However, two weeks ago I did start using a contreceptive patch. I have no visible discharge, there is no odor or burning. Just itching. The only thing I have found to relieve the itching at all is to take an incredibly hot bath. For added context I am 20 years old.

Hello,

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I have read your question fully and understand your concerns.

From what you have mentioned, it looks like you have an either a fungal infection or a mild dermatitis (or a mixture of both). Fungal genital infections can occur even without vaginal discharge, with just the itch as the symptom. When a woman goes on a hormonal contraception, due to change in the hormones, they get fungal infections. You mentioned you started the contraceptive patch recently, so may be this contributed to the fungal infection. Hopefully with a course of medication, it should settle and should not recur.

Though it looks like a fungal infection, there is a faint possibility of it being a mild dermatitis (inflammation of the skin). Though you have not changed your soaps or cosmetics, vulval dermatitis can also occur due to new underwear which you have worn or from some new trousers, may be the fabric of the garment irritated your skin. This can be treated with a mild steroid cream.

You could try a combination cream with anti-fungal and mild steroid. You could use Daktacort - it has Hydrocortisone 1% (which is a mild steroid –which would help with the dermatitis if any) and Miconazole 2% (which is an anti-fungal cream). Apply it twice a day for 1 week. You can also use a vaginal pessary (vaginal tablet) it you experience vaginal itching – you can use Clotrimazole 500 mg – it is just one tablet dose, insert it into your vagina. It will take care of any vaginal infection.

For the next week or so, do not use any soap or soap products to clean your genital area. Just use plain water. Keep the area dry free from moisture or sweat. Wear cotton inner garments and loose trousers.

Hopefully your symptoms will settle down. If the symptoms recur, kindly see your doctor – he may take a vulval/vaginal swab.

I hope this answer has helped you.

Thank you
