What Causes Persistent Upper Back Pain?

I am having back pain in my upper back between my shoulder blades and rib cage area. Thought it was a muscle strain and I have been taking 800 mg ibuprofen and a muscle relaxer but no relief. Not sure what it can be. It hurts when I lay down and when I sit up. Also moves from left side to right side and now its in the middle. This has be going on for about 5 days.
