What Causes Persistent Sharp Pain In The Back?

21 y/o F. I ve had a pain in my back (right side, upper part like in shoulder blade area) for five years. Started in junior year of high school, no accident, no injury, very out of the blue. It s a VERY sharp pain EVERY time I breathe or move, or sometimes even when I turn my head-either way. My mom is a nurse but she doesn t believe me when I tell her almost daily about the consistent pain I ve had for half a decade. It s very annoying having to live with this pain and I d really love some answers.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It would be best to have imaging done if none has been done as yet. The best imaging would be an MRI which would show the bones, nerves, muscles and any surrounding areas.

It would be able to determine if there is a structural reason for the pain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
