What Causes Persistent Painful Spots On The Chin?

clarithromycin Hi, I rarely get outbreaks of spots however the past month I have been getting painful, large, under the skin spots on my chin. I have been to the doctors the past few weeks and have tried different antibiotics, however the acne is still there and new spots are appearing. I have been prescribed Clarithromycin. My self-confidence is really low at the moment. Will Clarithromycin work? How long will it take to notice improvement? So far I have taken 3 tablets, each 500mg (I have 28 tablets altogether). When should I go back to the doctors if I don t see any improvement? What are the next steps likely to be - is there anything stronger?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Yes, Clarithromycin should work as it is one of the antibiotics used for acne. Acne is related to different factors such as:
(1) Presence of particular bacteria
(2) Inflammation of the skin
(3) Excess production of sebum (oily waxy substance)
(4) Blockage of hair follicles

Currently acne first line treatment involves the use of retinoid and antibiotics. You are taking the antibiotics, addition of a retinoid (topical), should be considered. Examples of topical retinoid are Adapalene, Tazarotene, and Tretinoin.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
