What Causes Persistent Migraines In A Person Going Through Menopause?

I ve started to get persistent migraines in the last couple years, when starting menopause. Never had them before and not much of a headache unless sick with a flu. My question is although maxil seems to work well if taken early enough, they seem to be worsening and more frequent. Today I ve actually felt as tho I had a stroke. I understand migraines are crippling to many, but I never thought mine would continue to get worse. I have documented the times these occur and they seem hormone related...right before I have my cycle, even tho I may not actually have a period, they are more sporadic now that I m almost 50. Any thoughts?? I know all the contributors , chocolate, wine, etc. but that s not what brings these migraines on, can I do something hormonly that will help?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,
Understand your concern.
Yes menopause is the important cause of migraine in some women due to hormonal imbalance due to estrogen deficiency.
Exact cause of migraine is not known
There is genetic factor, disturbance in brain blood flow, unknown factor and hormonal factor mainly contribute for development of migraine.

Following are the treatment of your problem:
1. Pain relieving medication:
- first use:Ibuprufen 500 mg three times a day or you can use aspirin or acetaminophen
- If not responds, you can use sumatriptan, combination of ergots and caffine
- In resistance case you can use opioids and glucocorticoids like prednisolone
- You can put ice pack on head.
Stay hydrated
Eat health diet.

Life style changes should be done as below
1. Enough sleep
2. Muscle relaxation exercise
3. Rest and relaxation
4. Keep headache diary: Identify trigger factor and which treatment is effective

Alternate therapy:
Hormonal replacement therapy: You can consult the doctor and should try estrogen based hormonal therapy
Acupuncture therapy
Massage and music therapy
behavioral therapy
Vitamin B-2 and
Tablet of CO Q can be useful in relieving pain.

Hope this may help you.
Best regards
Dr. Sagar
