What Causes Persistent High Fever In An Infant?

18 month old with fever (101.7-103.8) only in evenings x 3 days with no other symptoms other than a slight decrease in appetite. Fevers would be evident around 8-9 pm, treated with Tylenol/ibuprofen throughout the night and gone by morning. After 3 days of this fever is gone but loss of appetite (fighting to get any food down - making sure to keep hydrated however), whiny, lethargic, prefers to be laying around and being held (typically doesn t slow down and over last week had taken 3-4 naps a day). This has been going on for an additional 4 days now. Typically has bowel movements daily, sometimes twice daily and had gone first three days without a bowel movement at all. Gave a glycerin suppository and got results. Since that day, two additional bowel movements in last 4 days. Wet diapers are sufficient. Any thoughts?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Welcome to hcm,

Based on your child's symptoms it could be viral fever as your child had high grade fever for 3 days. Bowel movements are decreased as your child has not taken proper food.loss of appetite following viral infections are common. Just give him adequate fluids and within 2-3 days your child will improve as viral infections are self limiting.

Thank you
