What Causes Persistent Dry Cough?

Hi Doctor. I have had a persistent cough that began to occur about a year and a half ago, primarily upon waking and lasting for about 1-2 hrs before subsiding. As of late (for about the last month), it seems to be lasting longer and picks back up again in the evening hours. It is a semi-dry cough sometimes, but most of the time I cough up some sort of phlegm. I have also had noticeable difficulty swallowing during these episodes on many occasions. Should I be concerned? I have mentioned it to my doctor previously, but no one seems to be concerned about it.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of persistent dry cough which is due to persistent lung infection leading to upper respiratory tract infection. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to visit pulmonologist once and get it examined. You should get pulmonary function tests and X-ray chest done to find out exact level of infection and can start treatment accordingly. Doctor may prescribe combination of antibiotic along with antiinflammatory medications. You should take cough expectorants and do warm saline rinses 4-5 times a day. You should avoid cold carbonated beverages and oily and fried food substances. Apply mist humidifiers in room.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
