What Causes Persistent Dry Cough Despite Taking Zantac?

For the last four months I ve been suffering from a constant dry cough, it gets worse at night when I m trying to sleep. Recently I went to see a doctor. He told me to start taking Zantac for two months, and said it s probably Gerd. I ve started taking the Zantac and am noticing a decrease in my coughing. However, I still have a nagging worry in the back of my mind, I heard that lung cancer can cause the same kind of cough I ve been having, and that some people have been misdiagnosed as having Gerd. Since the Zantac seems to be helping with my cough, should I still be worried about it being cancer? And is so, what type of screening would be the best? Thanks, Gerald

Hi Gerald

Most likely this is GERD problem, but any persistent cough requires a chest x-ray and I would also get pulmonary function testing to rule out an asthmatic condition
