What Causes Persistent Diarrhea And Severe Stomach Cramps In A Teenager?

My 14 year old son started with watery diarrhea 4+ days ago. He s eating and drinking fine but is experiencing some severe stomach cramping, not all,the time, just intermediate. Still having some diarrhea, but not as watery. Dr ordered stool sample, however was just able to get one today so,it has not been checked yet. Otherwise, healthy boy, but his normal stools are like rabbit turds, so this is quite out of the norm for him. No fever. Concern to take to ER, or good to wait it out till morning?

Hi Dear,

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of persistent diarrhea and severe stomach cramps which seems to be due to acute gastroenteritis which seems to be due to viral infection and electrolyte imbalance in body.

Need not to worry. You should start treatment with combination of fluoroquinolones and ornidazole. Drink plenty of fluids to rehydrate. You should take banana on daily basis and light food. Avoid giving any sharp and spicy food. If symptoms keeps on persisting then visit general physician once and get it examined. You should go for blood tests as well and start treatment after proper examination. You should take Ibuprofen along with proton pump inhibitors as well. You should take antiemetic like domperidone and ranitidine for gastritis.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
