What Causes Persistent Cough With Fatigue And Loss Of Appetite?

I am 70 years old and relative in good health...I rarely get sick I was sick with flu type symptoms (chills, aches, dry cough) from 7-17 to 7-24. I did all the right things and got better....so, I just didn t want to rush out to Urgent Care. However, that s a long time for me to be laid up and it s boring. I then had 6 days of feeling good again. Then, on 7-31, just the cough and chest congestion part came back. So, now (08/08) I have been laid up another week and debating whether to go to urgent care. My symptoms now are moderate cough (worse at night)...no real discharge/mucus or anything ...fatigue and loss of some appetite. I have been sleeping good (9hrs) and taking fluids and tyelenol....but, I wake up feeling tired (the run over by a steamroller feeling). How long should I go on like this ? If I thought this would go away after time, I rather not be taking meds I don t need or getting x-rays. I am not confined to bed...just mainly to watch TV. My question is ....should I give it a few more days (like I did the last time) or does it sound like I need to get to a doctor/facility. Had a pneumonia vaccine booster shot in 2013.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I have gone through your query. It may be due to lower respiratory tract infection.

For further assessment you may require complete hemogram, chest X Ray or computed tomography chest after chest physician consultation.

You may also require sputum culture sensitivity after consultation.

Physician may advise antibiotics as per culture report.

Till then you can take cough syrup.

Continue nebulization and steam inhalation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shyam B. Kale, General & Family Physician
